IF quality, home delivered
food was good enough for his
mum, Frank Burke decided it
must be all right.
In a twist on the Victor Kiam pitch
- who said he loved Remington
shavers so much he bought the
company, Mr Burke took a half share
in the company making and delivering
the food for his mum.
The serial entrepreneur said when
his late mum, Edith, was finding it
hard to feed herself his sister ordered
in Tender Loving Cuisine.
Visiting his mother he tasted a
steak and kidney meal and was
instantly impressed by the food from
Tender Loving Cuisine.
Mr Burke, an older brother of TV
garden guru Don Burke, said he
approached the owner and ended up
buying into the business.
"The only time I heard my mother
swear, was when she described the
meals she was eating through her
regular meal delivery service," he
said.
He said what he loved about the
meals was that they were like the
food he remembered his mum cooking.
While the business is established
in Sydney and New South Wales, Mr
Burke has been involved in developing
a franchise model and spreading
its activities to Melbourne.
Based in Vermont, he said he took
a lot of business experience into Tender Loving Cuisine, including managing a range of franchises and a
post office in South Yarra.
TLC's offerings range from beef
goulash to vegetable frittata and
coriander chicken. Mr Burke said
many of the meals had received the
Heart Foundation tick endorsement.
Others were gluten free, low cholesterol,
organic diabetic friendly, easy
chew or dairy free.
"People talk about losing weight
but some of these people, if they are
old or recovering from chemotherapy,
need high energy meals," he said.
While the older population is the
predominant demographic for the
product, he said there were other
people that it was perfect for.
For instance, busy working people
had it delivered or if people were
recovering from illness or had just
had a baby the meals could be
delivered.
The meals range from $76.30 for
seven meals to $198.38 for 20 meals.
When trial dishes proved popular
they could be added to the more
than 40 dishes on the permanent
menu he said. The meals are snap
frozen and then heated in microwave
or conventional ovens.
Mr Burke said he was searching for
franchisees to share his passion for
the business.
While many established franchisors
are keen on Gen X and Y
recruits, shying away from Baby
Boomers, he was eager to snap them
up.
He said they needed to have empathy with the customers.
While reluctant to specify the cost
of buying into a franchise, he said
costs varied depending on the territory
and the needs of the potential
franchisee.
However, TLC entry level is at the
lower end of franchises.
While franchisees pay no extra fees
in the first five years, Mr Burke said
they would need a car to make
deliveries. They did not need a
refrigerated truck.
Anyone delivering to customers
has to undergo a police check.
He said it was ideal for a couple
and deliveries would be made during
week days.
Mr Burke said he got a great deal
of satisfaction from delivering meals
to many elderly people and others.
He said franchisees would build up
rapport with their customers and
pack the meals in their freezer.
Meals can be ordered via the
website or over the phone. Meals can
be cancelled with two days notice, he
said.
"We offer people a money back
guarantee but I have never had
anyone say they don't like the food,"
he said.
Mr Burke said after he spent a day
out delivering the food he felt a sense
of achievement.
"I think 'I am getting paid to do
this'," he said.
"At the end of the day I have such
a good feeling."

Mum's home cooking … straight to your door
A healthier meal in minutes with added TLC
When Frank Burke's mother, a distinguished lady in her eighties, wasn't enjoying her meal delivery service, Frank went looking for a healthy, delicious alternative.
"The only time I heard my mother swear, was when she described the meals she was eating through her regular meal delivery service. I knew that there had to be another option out there and it was important that at the age of eighty, my mother maintained her weight and enjoyed her food," commented Frank.
Frank discovered Tender Loving Cuisine (TLC), an independent organisation delivering high quality meals and he organised a delivery for his mother.
"My mum sent me home one day with a TLC frozen meal, and after heating it up, I couldn’t believe the taste I was experiencing, It was mum’s home cooking in a frozen meal – it was fantastic," said Frank.
"Each meal is independently tested to show they meet strict nutrition srandards…"
Each TLC meal is developed by a chef and nutritionist, and is created with the highest quality ingredients available. Most meals have received the Heart Foundation’s Tick of approval.
With special dietary packages available for people requiring gluten-free, blood-sugar control, low-cholesterol or organic options, anyone can order from TLC and be confident that they are eating a healthier meal.
"Each meal is independently tested to show they meet strict nutrition standards for saturated fat, trans fat, sodium and vegetable content," said TLC CEO, Jack Barker. "TLC is not only about convenience but it is about ensuring your family receives high-quality, nutritious food."
TLC offers clients a wide variety of meal options - including dinners, soups and desserts – and the menu is available at www.tlc.org.au. Meals are available in regular or large sizes, with several easy-chew and high-energy options available.
TLC currently delivers to Sydney, Melbourne, Newcastle, the NSW Central Coast and NSW North Coast. Clients can place a once only order or organise for a regular weekly delivery option.
There is no obligation or contract to sign and if you are not fully satisfied with the service, TLC will gladly refund your money in full on the first order of up to 7 dinners.

Kathleen Delivers Tender Loving Care
By Katrina Adamski
Kathleen Kinchington clocks up many kilometres every week traveling from western Sydney to deliver meals to elderly North Shore residents.
For nine years she has travelled 230kms each week from her home to Penrith to deliver dinners for Tender Loving Cuisine, a prepared meals supplier.
Mrs. Kinchington, 58, uses her own car to deliver the ready-to-eat meals, picking them up from the factory at Marrickville and delivering them to clients from as far west as Emu Plains right through to Wahroonga.
She often surprises her clients with a special gift as well and their reactions touch her heart.
"It may be just a covered coat hanger, but I had one lady whose tears began to flow out and she couldn't thank me enough," Mrs. Kinchington said.
"She didn't want me to go and even followed me out to the gate, still thanking me.
"I think that's what makes Christmas the best time of the year – people are just so grateful when you show up with their meals and their eyes light up when you come with a gift as well."
She said there were a lot of lonely people who enjoyed the companionship.
"I like to spend time with them, not just drop off a meal and go," Mrs. Kinchington said.

Helping of Friendship
By Ellen McIntosh
IT was the client's reaction to her gift which took seasoned Penrith courier Kathleen Kinchington by surprise.
"It was just a covered coat hanger, but I guess the thought
behind it must have touched her heart," she said.
"The tears began to flow and she couldn't thank me enough."
A courier with prepared meals supplier Tender Loving
Cuisine (TLC) for the past nine years, Mrs. Kinchington said her job had some great moments.
"People are just so grateful when you show up with their meals and their eyes light up when you come with a Christmas gift as well."
She often clocks up to 230 km a day delivering dinners using her own car to pick up from the TLC factory at Marrickville and delivering to clients from Emu Plains to Wahroonga on the North Shore.
She liked to give her elderly clients something extra during the festive season, Mrs. Kinchington said.
"As well as the dinners I like to give them a Christmas card and a little gift. I make little covered coat hangers and crochet-edged hand towels for my clients.
"It's not a lot but you should see the reaction – people are thrilled. There are a lot of lonely people out there and they really enjoy the companionship."
TLC chief executive Jack Barker said many clients were in
their 80s and 90s, some even aged over 100, and loneliness was a big issue for many.
"I actually don't see them as clients but as friends," Mrs.
Kinchington said. "When I go delivering I'm really visiting my friends. I've done everything from post letters to mop floors and put meals in the microwave for them."
Not even a recent broken ankle and surgery could stop her: "I've managed.
